The project
The abundance of Greek mythology, combined with the need to preserve and spread the intangible cultural heritage, constitute the incentive towards the exploration of new ways to depict and narrate these fascinating “stories”. The COSMOS project aims at the wide diffusion and the better understanding of this complex and monumental work, by means of an attractive, user-friendly and easily accessible tool.
The main goal is to easily visualize the correlations among the myths’ three basic elements, the stories, the characters featured in them and the places these stories are set in. Additionally, COSMOS includes the representations of myths in ancient artworks, highlighting the correlations with the depicted characters, the places where the art was produced, as well as their present location.
COSMOS offers the opportunity to record the Greek mythology, both in written and visual forms. Furthermore, it constitutes a trigger for expanding this project internationally, including mythologies and artworks of other cultures.
The partners of this project are Ekdotike Athenon as the project coordinator and the Integrated Systems Laboratory of the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications on behalf of the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos” as the scientific coordinator.
COSMOS is co‐financed by the European Union and Greek national funds through the Operational Program Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, under the call RESEARCH – CREATE – INNOVATE (project code: Τ1EDK-04283).
Duration: 30 Months
Total budget: €238.348,28

NCSR “Demokritos”
The National Center for Scientific Research “Demokritos” is today the largest multidisciplinary Research Centre of Greece, over 50 years devoted to research, education and innovation. The Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications (IIT) focuses on research and development in the areas of Telecommunications, Networks, Web Technologies and Intelligent Systems.
The “Integrated Systems Laboratory” (ISL) was established in 2000. Main target of the convergence and integration of IT Programs creating new pilot programs related to scientific areas that the Institute considers as areas of high future importance where it has remarkable experience in terms of either personnel expertise or internal investment, even of external funding.
Some areas of ISL expertise: (a) the scientific coordination of EU funded and National Managing Authorities (FocusLocus, Flysec, PYRONES, AF3), (b) the development of applications with dynamic presentation of information (TASS, Oculus Sea) c) the development of innovative gamified applications in the field of Culture (iGuide Knossos, Fruzzle) and (d) the organization of educational workshops on Digital Arts and Robotics (SMARTcamp).
